Obituaries

Clifford E. Morehouse, Jr.

Age 80, left this earth on December 20, 2013 to join his wife Darlene Nye Morehouse in heaven.

Clifford was the son of Marcella and Clifford Morehouse, Sr. Clifford and Darlene were married 48 years prior to Darlene’s passing on May 12, 2003. Clifford spent many years working a farm and raising a family as well as retiring from Shepard Niles after many years of service. He also was a 66-year member and past Master of Townsend Grange #1208.

Surviving Clifford is his daughter, Kenna Morehouse (David) Sawdey of Easley, SC, and son, Blaine (Kathryn) Morehouse of Horseheads, NY. Also surviving him are his most prized accomplishments, granddaughter Alyssa March (Robert) Wixson of Cayuta, NY, grandson Brandon March of Easley, SC, and grandson Tyler Morehouse and granddaughter Danika Morehouse of Horseheads, NY. Clifford was also blessed with two great grandsons, Andre Wixson and Xavier March.

He so enjoyed visits from the grandchildren as they danced for him or showed off their latest karate move. As for those two great grandbabies, they could do no wrong. Jumping on the bed was a privilege.

Also surviving him is his sister, Marion Morehouse Boyce, and brother, Frank Morehouse, of Watkins Glen, NY; mother-in-law Joanne Nye of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; sisters-in-law Sandra (Dick) Jones of Ocala, FL, and Julie (Dana) Nye Corley of Jensen Beach, FL; and brothers-in-law David Nye of Ocala, FL, and Timothy Nye of West Palm Beach, FL. Clifford is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews: Don & Jean Boyce, Marcie & Raymond Ergott, Patti & Michael Bilinski, Clifford (Kip) & Nancy Boyce, Robert & Heidi Morehouse, Dawn (Morehouse) & Bill Hornsberger and many, many neighbors who meant the world to him, and very dear friends Roger and Cora Miller. Clifford was predeceased by his wife Darlene, brothers-in-law Fred Boyce and Theodore Nye, and his parents.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Vedder & Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls on Thursday, December 26 from 6 to 8 PM and on Friday, December 27, from 1 to 2 PM. A funeral will be held at the conclusion of calling hours on Friday. Clifford will be laid to rest in the Beaver Dams Cemetery beside his wife immediately following the funeral. Phil Pecks will be playing the bagpipes.

Robert Depew

Age 89, passed away on Friday, December 13 at the Cayuga Medical Center with his loving wife, stepson, brother, grandson and granddaughter close by.

Bob, the oldest of seven children, is survived by his wife, Paula Depew; stepson, Tom Brown; stepdaughter, Nancy Clark; brothers, George and wife Sharon from Florida, Kenny and friend Jan from Watkins Glen, and Albert and wife Thelma from Montour Falls; sister, Pauline Patchen from North Chemung; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Keech Depew, and sister, Gertrude.

He attended school in Odessa and later joined the Army. He drove tractor trailer for Boss Linco for over 25 years and drove stock cars at North Chemung for over 20 years. He was a huge fan of Nascar racing. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon.

He loved playing cards and spending time at the Moose Lodge #426, at which he was a longstanding member.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY on Monday, December 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held there on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Harriett Everett

Harriett French Everett, age 100, of Montour Falls, NY, died at Schuyler Hospital surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, November 23, 2013.

“When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, remember the love we all have shared and that will comfort thee.”

She was born on June 11, 1913 to the late Merton and Mabel Northrup French. Harriett was retired from the Odessa-Montour School District as an Elementary Librarian.

Harriett was predeceased by her husband, George W. Everett Sr., son Richard, brother Robert French, granddaughter Linda Everett and dear friend Dorothy McCarty.

She is survived by sons George W. Jr. and wife Hazel of Horseheads, and Robert and wife Carol of Watkins Glen; brothers Edwin French and son Gary, and Edward French and son Kevin, all of Horseheads; grandchildren Lori and Robert Doughty, Karen (Rudy) and Mark Storm, Kelie and David Stansfield, Lisa Everett and Kevin Beebe, Thomas and Melody Everett, and Tammy and Jeffrey Everett.

Harriett had 10 great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, and many dear friends, nieces and nephews.

Donations in Harriett’s memory can be made to the ARC or a charity of your choice.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours Friday, November 29 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, with the service to follow at 3:00 pm, officiated by Jeanne Bleiler. Both will be held at the Vedder & Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls.

Mary Primerano

Mary Primerano of Watkins Glen fell asleep in Christ on Friday, November 8th, 2013.

She was born in Garfield, NJ on November 19th, 1937 to the late Vincent and Maria Diliberto.
She was married to Dominick Primerano on June 14, 1958.

She is survived by her husband, Dominick, and her children: sons Dominick Jr. (married to Laura) from Deltona, Florida; David (married to Mary) from Dundee, NY; and Thomas from Burdett, NY; and daughter Debbie (married to Skeet) from Watkins Glen, NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kimberly, Joshua, Daniel, Rebecca and Rachel.

Mary was laid to rest on Monday, November 11th at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Reading Center, NY.

Louis P. "Paul" Vickio, Sr.

Louis has taken his place in the heavenly Kingdom of our Lord above on November 8, 2013.

Born on August 13, 1913, yes, 100 years, to Joseph and Rachael (Patrone) Vickio in Montour Falls. Louis was predeceased by his parents; brothers, William, Guy, Nickolas, and Michael; his sisters, Minnie, Mamie, Mary, Louise (his twin) and Marguerite; niece, Patricia Orcut and nephew, David Orcut; the love of his life, Mary F. Vickio, who he spent 71 years of marriage with.

Louis is survived by his daughter, Faith (Charles) Ciprich and their daughter, Dolores (William) Hrynko and their children, Desiree Ellison, Jacq Goehner, Victoria Goehner, Bradley Hrynko; their daughter, Maria (Scott) Eaton and their son Wyatt; their daughter, Claudine (William) Ciprich-Atwood and their children, Morgan Atwood and Charles Eisenhart, his daughter, Sydney Mann-Eisenhart; son, John L. Vickio, Sr., his son, John L. Vickio, Jr., his son, Gianni Vickio; daughter, Angela Vickio; her son, Samuel Smith; son, Louis P. (Mary) Vickio, Jr.; their daughters, Bernadette Vickio, Antoinette Vickio, Juliet Vickio and Natalie Vickio; son, Edward A. (Linda) Vickio and their children, Brian Vickio, Deanna Marusarz and Gordan Crans.

Louis graduated with a BSME from Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio. He retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1980. For the next 15 years Mary and he operated their own day care, where many of the students learned how to count, write their names and add before they entered school. After that (at 76 years of age) Louis, Mary and his son Edward built and operated Vickio's Deerfield Park, a campground.

Then Louis was recruited by his sons Louis Jr. and Edward to perform calculations for his part in a patent they received for a Dynamometer. He performed these calculations at the age of 91. The patent was issued and presented to him at his 70th wedding anniversary. Louis loved to play cards with Mary and their faithful friends Patricia Hastings, Ginger and Guy Beebe, Cathy Love and Christina (Kelly) Amisano.

Louis and Mary also loved to watch the Yankees play. They never missed a game, wore Yankee garb when they played and knew every player and their stats. When Mary wasn't home he would sneak in an old-time western, which he dearly loved to watch. Louis was considered a father by many of the young people that grew up knowing him.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the Vedder & Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 13, at 3:00 p.m.at St. Mary's of the Lake in Watkins Glen. Interment, with committal prayers, will then take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that one donate to the Catholic Daughters of Saint Mary's Church in Watkins Glen.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses at Schuyler Hospital, Dr. Singh, Dr. Saks, the first responders and all the additional personnel that have spent years of service and dedication to the well being of both Louis and Mary Vickio.

William John (Jumper) Roberts

Jumper passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home in Odessa, New York.

He was born on November 7, 1946, in Elmira, NY to George L. and Marion Monahan Roberts.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Teller Roberts; mother, Marion F. Roberts; sister-in-law Sara (Albert) May and children of Oklahoma; niece Nanette Roberts of Elmira; and nephew Richard J. Roberts of Texas, along with several cousins and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his father, George L. Roberts, and siblings Patrick, George Wayne and Jane Roberts.

Bill was a very positive person and is missed by his faithful dog Heidi.

Jumper retired from Shepard Niles in July 2013 after 44 years of dedicated service. He was past president of the Mechanics Club in Montour Falls, NY, and coached Tee Ball and girls 5th and 6th OMCS basketball.

Jumper, along with his buddies, was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Dorothy June Tompkins

Age 96, of Montour Falls, passed away at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility on Sunday, November 3, 2013.

Dorothy was born on June 28, 1917, a daughter of the late Sherman and Nellie (Winton) Breedlove. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ernest and Richard Breedlove; a sister, Elsie Barr; a special nephew, William "Billy" Rosewall; her first husband and father of her children, Loyal H. Wickham, and her second husband, Claude Tompkins.

She is survived by her son, David (Terri) Wickham, Tularosa, New Mexico; daughter, Sandra (David) Sidle, and son, John (Jackie Lynn) Wickham, both of Alpine, NY; 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 more on the way; 15 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Jean Ferguson, Wyoming; and brother-in-law Jessie Tompkins, Alpine, NY.

Dorothy loved her large family of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She just loved sitting quietly and watching all the interaction better known as chaos. Dorothy's best legacy is her family.

She was a member of the Montour Methodist Church, Eastern Star Fern-Tyrone Chapter #142, Catharine Mother's Club, Philathea Class, Widows Group, and the Home Bureau.

Donald S. “Scotty” Scott

Donald S. “Scotty” Scott was born in Rome, NY on October 11, 1946, to Dorothy and Wendell V. Scott. After a long courageous battle with cancer, Scotty went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on October 28, 2013.

Scotty is survived by his wife of 25 years, Joan Cole-Scott; children, Rich (Marlana) Scott, Wendy (Brian) Cozzens, Chad (Virginia) Maphis, and Christian (Stacia) Maphis; grandchildren Noah, Brianna and Emilee, Kayleigh, Austin, Angelina and Aleigha, Aidan, and one on the way; adopted grandchildren Lance (Cassandra) McElroy and Laura McElroy, and adopted great-grandchildren Tyson and Aryanna. He is also survived by his siblings Jon (Sandy) Scott, Robert (Janice) Scott, Fredrick (Bonnie) Scott and Darla (Bruce) Kimmey; several nieces, nephews and
great nieces and great nephews; and best friends Larry and Judy Hall.

Scotty wore many “hats” and was a huge inspiration to many during his life. He was retired from the Department of Corrections (22 years); retired from the U.S. Army (27 years); scorekeeper for the Odessa-Montour boys basketball team (30 years); Odessa Volunteer Fire Department (30+ years); Montour Falls Volunteer Fire Department; a member of Hose Team for the Odessa and Montour Fire Departments; Halpin Fire Equipment; Ward LaFrance Fire Equipment; an avid bowler in two leagues; Barber Shop Quartet; involved with Boy Scout Troop 50 and Pack 3050; American Legion Post 676; O-M Little League coach; O-M bus driver; RSVP Volunteer; Schuyler County Ambulance Association; Schuyler County Dispatch; Squires Drum and Bugle Corps; and Song Leader, Trustee and Soul Winner at Grace Baptist Chapel, Elmira and an avid Geocacher.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, from 2:00pm-4:00pm with a service to follow. Burial with military honors will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Odessa, NY.

Harry Watkins

Age 88, of 204 Genesee Street, Montour Falls, left Earth on September 24.

Harry was born Feb. 7, 1925 in Detroit to Mary Louise Jackson and Harry J. Watkins. Harry was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Robert (Cleo) and Eddie; his former wife and mother of his children, Shirley Mann-Smith, and his daughter-in-law, Kevin’s wife, Ava.

He leaves behind his loving children, Theresa (Charles) Callahan, Englewood, CO, Stephen (Debra), Trumansburg, NY, Kevin, Fayetteville, GA, Judith (Janey Jackman), Parker, CO, and Lisa (Kelly) Hersh, Irving, TX; grandchildren Daniel, Peter, Anwar and Mariah; a great-grandchild, Camilla. Helen, Melvin, Robert and Greg have lost an uncle, and Nate and Natalie a great uncle.

A beloved fixture in whatever community he was in, Harry made the most of life, challenging boundaries, expanding perception and championing knowledge and education throughout his lifetime.

Drafted by the USN for WW II, Harry started work at Corning, Inc. in 1943, becoming an accomplished glass blower. With the exception of his time at Tuskegee, Harry continued to work at Corning in multiple roles until retirement as a lab technician. Two patents were awarded bearing his name during his tenure.

Harry worked additional jobs in Ithaca at the Box Car, Ichabod and other locations. This afforded the family the opportunity to join him in his true passion, horses and polo.

After retiring from Corning in 1985, Harry moved to Kentucky to follow his passion for horses and worked for Equine Science. Upon his return to New York, Harry continued to work with any teen or young adult to offer guidance and mentoring, always glowing with their successes. With frequent trips to Colorado to see family, Harry developed lasting friendships out west and treasured his time there. Friends would take him to the opera one night and the rodeo or cattle auctions the following day, and then the horse track the next.

Harry considered himself to be the luckiest man on Earth with the family and community that surrounded him and supported him. His passion for life and the people around him made that support easy. Recently, Harry and his close friend, Roger Araujo, had taken another of his passions, music, and introduced Opera Night to Montour Falls.

Bernard C. (BC) Root

Age 58, of Virginia Beach, VA, formerly of Cayuta, NY, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee Street, Montour Falls, on Saturday, September 28 from 1-2 p.m., with a funeral service following at 2 p.m.. Burial and committal service with full military honors will be held immediately afterward at the Cayuta Cemetery.

He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Davies (Alan) of Sterling, VA, Andrea Delgado (Eddie) of Suffolk, VA, Patty Wallace (Alan) of Jerseyville, IL, and Pam DeLooze; a sister, Susan (James) Antes of Horseheads; brothers Albert (Charlene) of Rock Stream, Roger (Liz) of Wellsville, Kevin (Mary) of Van Etten, and Stanley (Clara) of Williamsport, PA; grandchildren Kaylee, Gabrielle and Chelsea Urschel, Corey and Miranda Prentice, Hailey, Sabrina, and Kaydence Delgado, Seth Root, Johnathan Newingham, Katherine Wallace, Amber DeLooze, and Christopher Wheeler; along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his
father, Elden K. Root; his mother, Shirley Hartford Root; and a brother, Elden K. Root Jr.

BC honorably served his country for 20 years, retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1993 as an air traffic controller. Upon his retirement he worked for Maersk, then Direct Chassis Link, until the time of his death.

Howard M. Fox Jr.

Age 83, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2013. Howard was born on August 1, 1930 in Elmira NY.

Howard is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Harriette Neal Fox; children, Cindy Emerson (Gary) and Deborah Griffen (Eric); cherished grandchildren, Brian Emerson (Val), Christie Emerson (Kyle), Cody Evans (Natalie) and Katie Griffen (Gerard). Also surviving are his Aunt Dorothy Berardo, cousin David Sheen and loving nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful canine companion, Abby.

Howard graduated from Elmira Free Academy, attended Ryder College and was drafted into the Army. He served in Germany during the Korean War and he was proud to be a member of the Galeton, PA VFW. Howard retired from Marine Midland Bank and later from Elmira Savings & Loan in Elmira, as Assistant VP. He was a Scout leader in Pine City for 20 years and took his Scouts on many adventures including rafting down Pine Creek, PA and participating in many Klondike Derbies.

He was on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement and loved taking his grandson Cody to help the Arctic League on many Christmas mornings over the years. He loved the outdoors, especially his cottage on Seneca Lake, his camp on Pine Creek in PA, and the Adirondack mountains, of which he and his family climbed many peaks.

Howard was a very generous and caring man who would give his time and resources to those in need, and he was a lifelong friend to many.

The family has planned a private memorial service, but those wishing to remember Howard may do so through memorials to the Arctic League in Elmira or to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Howard will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A special thanks to Dr. O’Brien, oncologist, and Janet and Sabrina, his nurses, for their excellent care and friendship at Guthrie.

Helen (Ellison) Conkright

Of Lowman, NY, formerly of Watkins Glen, NY. Our dearest Mom was reunited in Heaven with the two loves of her life, her husband John and grandson, Erik Franzese. She passed away from declining health at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA on August 26, 2013.

Helen was born January 10, 1927 to Homer and Minnie Ellison. She leaves her devoted, loving, always there for each other daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Brent Andrews of Lowman, NY; her stepgrandchildren, Cameron, Carrie and Colby Andrews, and her sister-in-law, Ellen Hulslander of New Port Richie, FL. Helen had many special nieces, nephews and cousins who meant the world to her, along with her feline companions and they are missing her.

Helen touched the lives of many friends everywhere, especially in her hometown of Watkins Glen and most recently her supportive and caring neighbors in Holly Park Terrace, especially Joyce, Frances, Charlie and Sue, Ron and Nikki.

She was predeceased by John, her husband of over 60 years; her grandson, Erik Franzese; her sister, Frances Ellison, and parents Homer and Minnie Ellison.

Helen retired from Watkins Glen Central School with 20 years of service. Her earlier years were spent at Ellison's Souvenir Shop and Taxi Service across from the Glen. She loved playing cards, bowling, fishing and traveling with her husband, family and friends. Helen was a life member of the Mechanics Club and the Moose Club of Montour Falls, NY.

The family extends tremendous thanks to the entire staff of Robert Packer Hospital for their care, kindness and compassion during this difficult time.

Aurelija Crljen

Age 77, formerly of Burdett and Valois, NY, went to be with her Heavenly Father on August 15, 2013 at St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Facility in Elmira, NY.

Aurelija was born in Dol-Koter, Slovenia to Maria (Marcella) and Josip Rihter. She was predeceased by her parents, several siblings, and longtime companion Elmer Illes.

She is survived by a daughter, Mira (Jimmy) Meriwether from Jacksonville, North Carolina; her three grandchildren, Michael, Miranda and Matthew; a sister, Zdenka (Paul) Trevillian from Cardiff, Australia; and friends and caregivers Mary and Frank Smalley from Valois, NY.

Aurelija has been a prayer warrior for Bethel Grove Bible Church in Ithaca, as well as friends and family. She was known for her Yugoslavian accent, outgoing personality, and her giving spirit.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee Street, Montour Falls. Burial will be at Hector Presbyterian Church Cemetery at a later time.

A very special "Thank you" to all the medical staff from Schuyler, Ithaca, Sayre and Elmira who have helped with her care over the years, including Burdett volunteer firemen and Schuyler Ambulance Service.

Grace Carolyn Clark

Age 83, of Seneca View, Montour Falls, NY, who previously resided in Dundee, Horseheads, Hammondsport, and Montour Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2013 after a long illness.

Carolyn was born in Providence, RI, on March 7, 1930 to Susie and Lloyd Leman. After high school, she married Douglass P. Clark, and they lived in Montour Falls, where they raised their family of seven healthy children. She worked at the old Schuyler Hospital in downtown Montour Falls before going to work at Cornell University. She retired from Cornell in 1985 to pursue her lifelong dream of serving in the Peace Corps, where she worked for two years in Sierra Leone, Africa. Upon leaving the Peace Corps, Carolyn bought a large house in Hammondsport, NY, where she ran a successful bed and breakfast, Another Tyme, for 10 years. After selling the house, she moved to Horseheads, NY, next to her daughter Becky.

Carolyn was active in the former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Montour Falls, and later in St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Hammondsport. She was also a volunteer in the Schuyler County Volunteer Ambulance Association. She was very active in her children’s lives as well, making their clothes, teaching them to cook, and doing craft projects with them. She is famous for the elaborate birthday cakes she made for her family. She also was active in the PTA and served as a Girl Scout and a 4-H club leader. She loved gardening, painting, sewing, and traveling. Besides Sierra Leone, she visited Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Holland, Brazil, Ireland and Israel.

She is survived by her children, Deborah (Eric) Kantor of Albany, NY, Douglass Scott (Eva) Clark of Corpus Christi, TX, Kimberly Snell of Middletown, RI, Barbara (Michael) Fetterolf of Hortonville, WI, and Kelly Stone of Rock Stream, NY; her sons-in-law, Stewart P. Green of Sebring, FL and Glenn Marrlow of Jacksonville, NC; 17 grandchildren, Jonathan and Benjamin Kantor, Logan and Darrell Clark, Christina Clark Perez, Stewart D. and Kelly Green, Sarah Marrlow, Mark and Daniel Flahive, Andrew and Alex Snell, Megan Fetterolf Gallagher, Jay Anna Fetterolf, and Mackenzie and Hannah Stone; and her very dear friend Virginia Eaton.

Carolyn was predeceased by the love of her life -- her loving and devoted husband of 37 years, Douglass P. Clark; two daughters, Rebecca Ruth Green and Jennifer Ann Marrlow; her parents, Lloyd Leman and Susie Leman Poppleston; her sister, Barbara Cole Simmons; her mother-in-law, Ruth Riley Clark (“Mimi”); and her beloved dog, Polly.

Bruce M. Durfey

Age 64, passed away very unexpectedly on August 14, 2013 at his home.

Born on April 13, 1949, the son of the late Arthur and Rosalind Durfey, he is survived by his brothers, Wayne (Karen) Durfey and James (Susan) Durfey. both of Odessa, NY; three nephews, Jeffrey (Paula) Durfey, Robert Durfey & family, and Ryan Durfey & family; an aunt, Marilyn Dayton of Pine Valley, NY; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; by a niece, Michelle Durfey, and by a nephew, Brett Durfey.

Bruce graduated from Odessa-Montour Central School and Corning Community College. He had been working at Camp Monterey as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor, a job he truly loved. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Age 89, of Montour Falls passed on August 13th to join her husband, Thomas, peacefully at home surrounded by family.

She is survived by sons Clayton (Barb), Dennis (Teena), and Kevin (Lori); grandchildren Tonya (Kevin) Rounds, Brent (Melissa) Snow, Jeremiah (Theresa) Snow, Heather (Mark) Hall,
Jason Snow, Ashley Snow, and Rachel (Wray) Braswell; 10 great grandchildren, and siblings Bonnie, Jack and Joan.

Gwen was very active in the Methodist Church and The Eastern Star. She was Mayor of Montour Falls for 14 years. She enjoyed spending time with her granchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Joy Hanlon

Age 85, of Odessa, NY passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2013 surrounded by her loving family.

Joy was the daughter of the late George and Thelma Sullivan. She will be remembered as fun loving. She enjoyed playing cards, beautiful flowers, feeding the birds, and being a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

Joy was an X-ray technician at Arnot-Ogden Hospital and worked for Dr. Ward in Odessa. She was a wonderful homemaker as well.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William. Joy is survived by her daughter, Sue (James) Wigglesworth; son, Mike (Laurie) Hanlon; grandsons, Kyle and Neil Hanlon; sister, Kay Anderson; and several nieces and a nephew.

Age 43, of Montour Falls, NY passed away on July 29, 2013.

Helen was born February 23, 1970 to Donald and Betty Loui. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Nelson; a daughter, Faith Nelson, and grandchildren Michael Abbey and Alexander McKie.

Annella Jane (Robinson) Wickham

Age 94, of Odessa, NY passed away peacefully on June 27, 2013 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility, Montour Falls.

She was born in Akron, Ohio on June 19, 1919.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Sheldon Wickham; her sister, Francis Eileen Robinson; and her parents, Lee Haas Robinson and Nella Ann Shackleton Robinson.

Annella moved to the Washington, D.C. area as a young girl. In Washington she graduated from Roosevelt High School and Temple Business College, and attended classes at George Washington University.

She worked in government during the Roosevelt administration before and during World War II.

In Odessa she had been an active member of the Odessa Methodist Church Choir, the Schuyler County League of Women Voters, the PTA, the OX5 Club and other local groups.

Annella enjoyed playing cards and took her bridge games very seriously. She enjoyed a good sense of humor, as she had one herself.

Calling hours and a funeral service were held June 30.

William ‘Doc’ Pylypciw

Age 91, of North Syracuse, died July 7, 2013.

"The Chief," as many knew him, was born in Johnson City and first came to the Watkins Glen area in the late 1930s when he was stationed at the CCC camp in Burdett. It was while there that he met Delores Bartone at a dance at the Grange Hall in Burdett. Bill and Dee married on July 11, 1942 and he was soon after sent to the Pacific for 22 months, working with a medical team on Wallis Island.

Retiring as a Chief Petty Officer from the Navy after 22 years, Bill worked at the Syracuse VA Hospital and Hancock Field, as Supply Manager. After retiring from that work, he studied and became a Real Estate Broker and formed the company Plipsu Real Estate, keeping active until recent years. In his spare time he did carpentry, and was an avid fisherman. Over the years Watkins Glen was his second home, and he enjoyed visiting many of the local residents.

Bill was predeceased by his wife Delores, as well as by two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by one sister, Olga Breswitz. Also surviving are his daughters, Janet (Jack) Hachmann of Liverpool and Kathy (Stan) Slingerland of North Syracuse; a son, Billy, of Watkins Glen; three grandsons, and a great granddaughter. There are also many nieces and nephews living in and out of the area.

Friends and family will be received at the "Link" at St Mary’s of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen on Friday, July 12, from 2-3 p.m. A brief prayer service will follow, and burial will be in Montour Falls Cemetery, with military honors.

Dawn McFall

Age 51, of Montour Falls, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

Dawn is survived by her loving husband, Daryl McFall; her sons, Adam (Cindy), William (Desiree) and Mark (Kristina); her grandsons, Jeremiah, Daryl, Broch and Connor; her father, Charles Vary; her mother, Carolyn Cox; her mother in-law, Abby McFall; eight siblings, and nine sisters-in law and brothers in-law.

Dawn was predeceased by her stepmother, Tori Vary, and father in-law, Howard McFall.

Gail Marie Hughey passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Clifford George Parsons

Age 82, of Montour Falls, New York passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

Cliff is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie Nichols Parsons; a son, Steven Parsons (Dawn); a daughter, Brenda Parsons (Robert Warren); grandchildren Kevin Parsons (Paula), Brandon Parsons (Sara), and Nicholas & Brett Parsons; and great grandchildren Paige, Blake and Britany. Cliff was predeceased by his mother, Susie Parsons, and daughter Patty Parsons.

Cliff was a Sergeant in the U.S.Army and served in the Korean War. He retired from Schuyler Hospital, where he was a Security Guard.

Age 94, passed peacefully at home with her family in Sarasota, FL on May 2, 2013. Ruth was formerly of Odessa, NY.

She was predeceased by her parents, first husband Jesse Hathaway, second husband Paul Wickham, a sister, a brother and two grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, Donald Hathaway of Texas and Tony Hathaway of Oklahoma; daughters Joan Pritchard of Sarasota, FL and Sue McCormick of Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren.

Diane Jenkins

Age 66, of Elmira Heights, NY, passed away on April 18, 2013 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center.

Diane was born on October 5, 1946 in Binghamton, NY.

She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Richard; a son, Joseph (Lisa) Yenger of
Horseheads, NY; and a daughter, Karen Yenger (Kevin Smith) of Norwalk CT. She was blessed with 3 granddaughters, Lia & Ashley Yenger and Olivia Smith. Diane was also survived by her brother, Bob (Joy) Cirba and daughters Nicki & Jess Cirba of Spencer, MA; sister Joanne (Cirba)(Don) Reicke and son Eric of Binghamton, NY; and brother Bill (Martha) Lanko and son Kristofor of Binghamton, NY.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine Connors, and father, Christopher Lanko,
and a special friend, Bertram Yenger. Diane worked over 20 years at Tops Market in Elmira and Macy's in the Arnot Mall.

Diane was forever devoted to her children and her grandchildren.

George A. Brown

Age 97, of Watkins Glen, NY and Winter Haven, FL, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Winter Haven Hospital.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Pamela Watson Brown; his first wife, Lillian Bailey Brown, and his son, Garry Brown. He is survived by his wife, Charlena R. Brown, son Collin Brown (Sandra) of Elmira, granddaughter Stacey Husted (Joel) of Montour Falls, and two
great grandchildren, Christopher and Rachel.

George was born at St. Andrews, Scotland on July 20, 1915 and came to the United States as an infant and became a U.S. citizen. He graduated from Cook Academy and was employed at Shepard Crane and Hoist, from which he retired. He proudly served in the Navy Sea Bees during
World War II, mainly in the South Pacific.

He was a member of the Elks Club, Mechanics Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion, and was a past member of the Montour Falls Fire Department.

Ruth Ash Dibble (Granny)

Age 97 of Brewerton, NY, passed away peacefully at Iroquois Nursing Home, Syracuse, NY, on March 1, 2013. She was born May 7, 1915 in Wyalusing, PA.

She was predeceased by husbands Thurlow J. Ash and Howard Dibble and stepdaughter Dolores VanBuskirk.

Ruth graduated from Elmira Business Institute and worked as an inspector at Eclipse and Westinghouse, from which she retired. Before moving to Brewerton, she lived for 60 years on
Church Street in Odessa, NY, attended the Odessa Methodist Church and for many years went to the Senior Center for lunch -- being picked up by the site’s van, driven by her good friend, Rick. Granny, as everyone called her, loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her pride and joy. Ruth in her leisure time spent hours listening to her books on tape provided by the Albany Library for the Blind.

Age 79, of Odessa, NY passed away on February 17, 2013 at Schuyler Hospital.

Beverly was born on August 28, 1933 to the late Basil and Elizabeth (Polly) Smith in Horseheads, NY.

Beverly was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Herbert (Bud) Fivie, in 2012. And by brother Walter (Jack) Smith of Alpine, NY.

Mary M. (Filippetti) Vickio

Our angel Mary has taken her place in the heavenly choir of our lord above on January 3, 2013. She was born on July 31, 1919 to Thomas and Christine (Martine) Filippetti in Watkins Glen.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; brothers Ernie, Joseph and Thomas; a sister, Loretta Vanhorn; a niece, Patricia Orcut, and a nephew, David Orcut. She is survived by the love of her life, Louis P. Vickio, Sr., who she spent 71 years of marriage with.

Daughter – Faith (Charles) Ciprich, their daughter Dolores (William) Hrynko and their children, Desiree Ellison, Jacq Goehner, Victoria Goehner, Bradley Hrynko; their daughter Maria (Scott) Eaton and their son Wyatt; their daughter Claudine (William) Ciprich-Atwood and their children, Morgan Atwood and Charles Eisenhart, his daughter, Sydney Mann-Eisenhart.

Son – John L. Vickio, Sr., his son John L. Vickio, Jr., his son Gianni Vickio, daughter Angela Vickio, her son Samuel Smith.

Son – Louis P. (Mary) Vickio, Jr., their daughters, Bernadette Vickio, Antoinette Vickio, Juliet Vickio and Natalie Vickio.

Son – Edward A. (Linda) Vickio and their children, Brian Vickio, Deanna Marusarz and Gordan Crans.

Mary is also survived by her wonderful sisters, Rachel Vickio, Henrietta Crouch, Gloria Menio, and Teresa (Ken) Cope along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.

One of Mary’s proud accomplishments was to graduate from Elmira College with a BS/MA Degree in Education with 5 certificates from the State of New York. She taught in area schools and for 15 years she and Louie owned a day care where many of the students learned how to count, write their names and add before they entered school. Mary was also a part owner in Vickio’s Deerfield Park, a campground.

Mary was a life member in the VFW, member of the Women of the Moose, sang in the Saint Mary’s Choir, Resurrection Choir and Adult Choir, liturgy committee, Eucharistic minister, prayer leader, and member of Catholic Daughters. Mary loved to play cards with her faithful friends Patricia Hastings, Ginger and Guy Beebe, Cathy Love and Christina (Kelly) Amisano. Mary also loved to watch the Yankees play. She never missed a game, wore Yankee garb when they played and knew every player and their stats. Mary and her sisters would call each other during the games to discuss the plays.

Steve Kenyon

Age 63, of Montour Falls, NY took the hand of his Savior and went to his eternal home on Sunday, December 30 while at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, with his loving
family at his side, after a valiant fight with leukemia.

He was born on April 3, 1949, the son of Charles and Doris L. Kenyon. Steve resided at 428 East Main Street in Montour Falls for his entire life, including the past 42 ½ years with his loving wife, Sharon Letteer Kenyon, who survives him. He graduated from Odessa-Montour School in 1967 and the Wellsville Vocational Division of Alfred State College in 1969. He was self-employed as a carpenter for 17 years.

Steve retired from the Southport Correction Facility in July, 2011, where he worked as an instructor and then a carpenter for almost 25 years. He was a former trustee for the Village of Montour Falls, and a former steward and officer in CSEA Local 156. He was also a longtime member of the Mechanics Club in Montour Falls.

Steve was predeceased by his father, Charles, in 1968, his father-in-law Tom Letteer, Sr. and mother-in-law Helen Letteer. In addition to his wife, Sharon, he is survived by his mother, Doris, of Painted Post (formerly Ovid) and his very best friend, Buddy, a Springer Spaniel. He has four sisters, Brenda (Dale) Nichols of Florida, Sharon (Gerry) Wilcove of Tennessee, Nancy (Ed) Silva of North Carolina and Linda Kenyon of Corning, as well as his brother-in-law Tom Letteer, Jr. and wife Nancy of Odessa. Also surviving him are nieces and nephews Skip, Melissa, Keny, Jennifer, Erin and Daphne and their spouses and children, as well as Maureen and Michelle (Eddie) and their children. Steve also leaves behind several maternal cousins, as well as a host of
“cousins-in-law” and caring friends and classmates who have “been there” for both Steve and Sharon, providing prayer, fellowship and support.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee Street in Montour Falls on Monday, January 7, 2013 from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m. A memorial service and celebration of his life will follow, led by Pastor Richard Hack of Lighthouse Baptist Church, Horseheads, NY. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Odessa.

Sharon and the family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Dr. O’Brien and all of the wonderful doctors and nurses in the Oncology Unit at Guthrie Clinic and Robert Packer Hospital for their care and friendship. He was an upbeat, happy and optimistic patient, and he appreciated not only their professional help and support, but also the friendly conversations and discussions they enjoyed.

Also, many thanks to the doctors and nurses of the transplant team at Strong Memorial Hospital, and especially to the medical staff of the ICU unit who tried so hard to help Steve. They provided compassionate advice, comfort and prayer to Sharon, Steve’s sister Linda and brother-in-law
Tom as they joined Steve on his final walk.

William J. “Sonny” Dickens

Age 76, of Alpine passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 29th.

Sonny was born on March 26, 1936 to Frank H. and Grace Roleson Dickens in Montour Falls. Sonny lived his youth in Mecklenburg and the Alpine area.

Sonny was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Ellis Dickens; a brother-in-law, Robert Ellis; his parents, and his “foster” father, Loyal Wickham.

He is survived by his daughters, Jolee (Chris) Carlisle, Jamee (Heath) Mack, Loree Dickens and Marcee Young. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Colin and Madelyn Carlisle, Karlee Dickens, Lacee Eldridge, Stephan Dickens, Brianna Paige, and Amy and Abby Young; his great grandson, Ryder Oney, and nieces Kemberlea and Jennifer.

Sonny enjoyed NASCAR racing and OMCS sports.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, with a service following at 3:00 p.m.

Frederick D. Todd

Age 75, known by many as “Uncle Fred,” passed away peacefully with his wife Joan by his side in his home at 414 West 2nd Street, Watkins Glen, NY on December 7, 2012.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, December 11 starting at 4 p.m. at the Montour Falls Fire Department, 111 Lee Street, Montour Falls, NY.

Fred served as a volunteer and paid firefighter for more than 55 years. He started his volunteer fire service career in 1958 when he joined the Montour Falls Fire Department. He served three years as foreman and was a member and co-captain of their firefighting racing team “The Swamp-stompers.” Due to his love and friendship for the members of the Montour Falls Fire Department, he asked for reinstatement into the department when he found out he had stage-4 lung cancer. The fire department accepted his reinstatement this fall, which made him so proud.

In 1966, Fred was employed by the City of Ithaca Fire Department, where he retired 26 years later. In 1967 he moved to Trumansburg, where he joined the Volunteer Fire Department and progressed through their ranks and was elected as the first Assistant Chief in 1972. He was also a member of the Watkins Glen Fire Department when he and his wife Joan moved to the Watkins Glen/Montour Falls area in 1997, and was one of their Fire Commissioners. The Enfield VFD made Fred an honorary member. Fred became active as a representative for the Central New York Firemen’s Association in the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.

In 1973 he was elected Historian of the Central New York Fireman’s Association, and in 1978 was elected their President (1978-80). As a member of FASNY he was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1981. He served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the Firemen Home in Hudson, NY for FASNY. He held numerous positions in FASNY and was serving as Historian for the Central New York Firemen’s Association upon his death.

Frederick was awarded the Ray Sherburne Award presented by the Central New York Firemen’s Association in 2006 for his dedicated service to that organization and to FASNY. Fred also retired from the Ithaca School District after 21 years as a supervisor of students.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan Marie Scanlon Todd; his two sons, Roland and Robert; daughter-in-law Laurie; granddaughters Nichole Furey, Ashley Todd and Madeline Todd; great granddaughters Hazel, Caroline and Harper; all his many nieces and nephews, and others who knew him as Uncle Fred.
