Schuyler Ambulance plans 'Fun-raiser'

Special to The Odessa File

WATKINS GLEN, March 31 -- The last couple of years Schuyler Ambulance has worked to raise awareness in the community of its countywide not-for-profit ambulance service, campaigning to help pay for medical equipment and supplies. The campaign this year includes four ways to have fun while donating at the same time.

“Our activities this year include a comedy show we hope people will enjoy,” says Jeremy Pierce, President of Schuyler Ambulance. The organization has hired a company that puts on comedy shows for the emergency medical community with nationally known comedians. “We want to do something different for our supporters,” says Pierce, “and you know they always say laughter is the best medicine.”

The show will be at The Glen Theater in Watkins Glen on April 23. It includes three headliner comedians: Eddie Clark, who’s appeared on TV’s Law & Order; Tom Anzalone, who appeared on America’s Funniest People; and Joey Novick (pictured at right), who has appeared on TV's Comedy Central.

All proceeds of the comedy show go to Schuyler Ambulance as a charitable donation, and will be used for medical equipment and other needed supplies.

The show will be hosted by Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards. There will be wine tasting and popcorn accompanied by door prizes donated from local companies. Volunteers from Schuyler Ambulance will be there to help run the show, and act as ticket takers and ushers for the evening. A live radio station broadcast will be set up outside the theater before the show, supported by Schuyler Hospital, Bleachers Bar & Grill, and Montour Glass.

Tickets are available online, or at the theater. The back of the tickets lists two local restaurants giving ticket holders 10% off their meals for that evening, Jerlando’s and the House of Hong.

Schuyler Ambulance has paid a fixed price for the entertainers, and the rest of the income goes directly to the organization to help support ambulance service for the community.

Other "fun-raisers" for the year will include a breakfast at the Montour Moose Club on Sunday, April 10; a Moose-Riders Motorcycle Ride on Saturday, July 23rd, and a NASCAR Raffle Ticket Drawing on July 27th. The goal is to raise $50,000 for the year to cover increased operational costs.

Schuyler Ambulance was formed in 1969 to provide first-response emergency medical service to Schuyler County. The association employs between 25 and 45 people (depending on the season) and has a volunteer membership of over 20 people most of the year. Its operating budget is over $800,000 a year. It owns five ambulances fully equipped for Advanced Life Support. SCVAA receives no financial support from the Federal, State, County, Village or Town. They are supported by service contracts, insurance payments, and donations only.
