A column on education in Watkins Glen

The following was written by Travis Durfee, President of the Watkins Glen Faculty Association. It is the 17th in a continuing series of monthly columns.

A successful service project

WATKINS GLEN, Dec. 16, 2018 -- This week the Watkins Glen Faculty Association (WGFA) wrapped up another successful holiday service campaign. The faculty delivered dozens of packages of new socks, undies and diapers to Schuyler Outreach.

The service project, the brainchild of WGFA’s Jeanette Lasko, was inspired by a story about a family from Rochester. A boy named Trevor George passed away unexpectedly at the age of 6. His community wanted to do something in his honor, and decided to create the Trevor’s Toes and Tushies event to collect socks and underwear for children in need. Lasko urged the WGFA to start a similar project in our community. The WGFA started collecting diapers in the past few years to round out the offerings.

WGFA members set up collection bins in the schools and at various points around the community. The response from the school and the community was robust again this year. The union collected an abundance of packaged essentials and delivered them to Catholic Charities for use in their Schuyler Outreach clothing distribution program this month.

We think these donations are something people can really appreciate. Folks encountering hardships due to catastrophe, such as flooding or a house fire, might not always think of these items, but people should not have to go without them. New essentials can really make the difference.

WGFA extends its gratitude to all of our partners in the holiday drive: Dollar General, Watkins Glen Public Library, Two Goats, Hector Wine Co., Visions FCU, CVS, Corning Elks, Watkins Glen Elks, and the Watkins Glen Central School District.
