Runners take off at start of the Live Like Liz 5K Run.

Live Like Liz 5K Race/Walk dodges storm, draws a crowd

WATKINS GLEN, June 7 -- The weather was at first very wet, and then threatening, and then -- suddenly, just in time for the race -- it was clear and sunny. And hot.

The fifth annual Live Like Liz 5K Walk/Run, held Sunday at the Watkins Glen High School and along the nearby Catharine Valley Trail, attracted more than 500 runners and walkers who generated an estimated $14,000 in funds for the fight against ovarian cancer.

That cancer claimed the life of Liz Amisano on Oct. 12, 2005 -- prompting this ongoing movement to spread the word, the awareness, about the disease.

And Sunday -- after registration in the WGHS Field House, a facility commandeered in the early-morning hours when rain was prevalent; and after a prayer and speeches -- the event culminated in a victory by Cody Scott of Ithaca, a Trumansburg High School track standout. The women's titlist was Emily Owen.

The race was in doubt until shortly before it began, both because of the drenching rain and then because of threatening weather to the southwest that might have been moving toward Watkins Glen, complete with high winds. Fire department personnel said they didn't want anyone out on the CVT if high winds started knocking limbs or trees down.

But the skies cleared and the race was held -- and much to the dismay of some runners, it turned stultifyingly hot on the trail, where no breeze was available. One runner collapsed at the finish line and was transported away by ambulance, while most others, sweating profusely, headed for the nearest cache of bottled water.

Race organizers said that more than 300 runners/walkers had preregistered, and that the total number of participants, counting a Kids' Race held on the Field House's indoor track, surpassed 500. There were 260 in the 5K race itself. The amount of money raised, one said, was expected -- at $14,000 -- to be equal to that of years past. One youngster, Isaac McIlroy, stood out among fund-raisers, gathering pledges totaling $605.
